Life Groups

At First UMC we believe by connecting with one another we gather the support, wisdom, and encouragement needed to be faithful followers of Jesus.  We want to make it as easy as possible for you to find places you can connect with others.  By joining a small group you can gather with diverse individuals for short term (semester/8-10 week classes) or long term groups (meet year-round).

Year-Round Groups

Book Nook:  Book Nook is a book study group which meet once a month, September through May, second Monday of the month, and discusses a new book each month.  The first book for this fall is And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hossein.  Next gathering is Monday, September 9, 1:00pm in the church lounge. Knitters/Crocheters:  This group is just as it sounds, a wonderful group of people who love to knit and crochet, who come together for crafts, conversation, and service.  Meeting every Thursday from 1:30-2:30 pm in the Church Lounge.  Currently they make baby blankets and hats for infants at the Altoona Hospital; sweaters for Mission Central’s Layette kits; and afghans for the church’s Comfortghan Project.  Want to join?  Contact Donna

Gardening Club: This group cares for the beautiful flowers and plants which surround our church, with planting, watering and careful upkeep through the seasons.  Sponsoring craft and plant projects for the congregation through the year, they share the love of God’s creation with all!  During the peak growing season they meet weekly on Wednesdays.  Want to join?  Contact Donna

Methodist Prayer Breakfast: This group meets once a month, September through May, the third Friday of the month at 9:00am at the Perkins Restaurant for breakfast, prayer, and support.  Want to join?  Contact Rich Reimer

9:30 Classes: There are 5 adult classes that meet year-round on Sundays at 9:30 am throughout the church building.  Each class chooses its own studies and resources.  The topics for each quarter are published with the other small groups in the fall, spring, and summer. You are welcome to attend any group for as long as you like.  These groups focus on learning the Word of God through Bible Studies and having conversations about how to practically live God’s call to transform the world.  We hope you will enjoy the warmth of these classes who study, serve, and play together!

This fall, all of our classes will be studying The Real Deal: An Authentic Adventure in Discipleship.

Semester Small Groups

Semester Small groups meet for 6-10 weeks. The groups are much more than study places. They are places to connect with other Christians who are seeking to be followers of Jesus. Each group is lead by two trained leaders covering a wide variety of topics. We’ve had activity groups like “Biking” and “Exercise”; study groups like “The Bible and Current Events” and “The Holy Spirit”; bible study groups like “The Kings of Israel”; as well as women’s groups, men’s groups, and the list goes on.  There are 3 semesters each calendar year (fall, spring, and summer). Each semester’s classes are published in print form and handed out during worship services and listed online. Registration takes place for 4 weeks prior to the beginning of classes. You may register one of two ways: Either visit our sign-up tables outside of every worship service or you may register online during sign up weeks.
